Do Brain Games Actually Improve Memory?

“Brain training” is a multi-billion-dollar industry built largely on a claim that doesn’t hold up well under scrutiny: that playing games designed to exercise memory, attention, or reasoning will make your memory, attention, or reasoning generally better in daily life. The honest research picture is more modest than the marketing, and it’s worth understanding exactly where the evidence is solid, where it’s shaky, and what “getting better at a puzzle” actually buys you.

The transfer problem

The central concept researchers use to evaluate brain training is transfer — does practicing one task improve performance on a different task? Transfer comes in two flavors. Near transfer means improvement on tasks very similar to the one you practiced — get better at one Sudoku variant, and you’ll likely get better at other Sudoku variants too. Far transfer means improvement on tasks that are conceptually related but structurally different — get better at Sudoku, and does your everyday planning or memory for appointments improve?

Near transfer is well established and unsurprising: practice makes you better at the thing you practiced, and often at close variants of it. Far transfer is where the evidence gets thin. The large, well-controlled studies that have tried to measure far transfer from commercial brain-training programs — including a widely cited 2010 study published in Nature involving over 11,000 participants — generally find that people get reliably better at the specific games they practiced, but show little to no improvement on independent cognitive tests measuring the broader abilities the games were supposed to be training.

What “you get better at what you practice” actually means

This isn’t a null result exactly — it’s a very consistent, replicated finding, just not the one the industry advertises. If you play a lot of Sudoku, you will get faster and more accurate at Sudoku specifically, recognizing patterns like naked pairs and X-wings more quickly over time. That’s a real, measurable skill improvement. What the evidence doesn’t support is the leap from “better at Sudoku” to “better working memory in general” or “sharper thinking at work.”

The practical takeaway isn’t that puzzles are worthless — it’s that you should evaluate a puzzle habit by what it actually gives you (an enjoyable, structured way to spend attention, genuine skill at that specific game, some evidence of mood and engagement benefits) rather than an implicit promise of general cognitive enhancement that the research doesn’t back up.

Where the evidence is more encouraging

A few areas have somewhat stronger support, though still with caveats. Some working-memory training programs — particularly n-back style tasks that specifically stress the same cognitive process across many contexts — have shown modest, short-lived improvements on related-but-not-identical working memory tests, which is a form of transfer somewhat broader than “just the same game” but narrower than “everyday cognition.” These effects tend to fade within weeks to months without continued practice, and the size of the effect is usually small compared to what marketing materials imply.

There’s also reasonably consistent evidence that staying cognitively and socially engaged in general — through any number of activities, puzzles included — correlates with better cognitive outcomes later in life. But correlational research like this can’t establish that the games caused the better outcomes; people who are already more cognitively engaged may simply be more likely to seek out puzzles in the first place. Why the marketing outpaces the science

Commercial brain-training companies have strong incentives to interpret ambiguous or mixed findings generously, and a 2014 open letter signed by over 70 cognitive scientists explicitly pushed back on industry marketing claims, noting that the scientific literature did not support assertions of broad, durable cognitive enhancement from brain-training games. That consensus statement is worth taking seriously — it wasn’t a fringe position, it was a broad expert pushback against specific, common advertising claims.

None of this means brain games are a scam in the sense of being useless. It means the honest framing is “an engaging way to practice a specific skill, with some possible secondary benefits around mood, habit-formation, and general engagement” rather than “a proven way to boost your IQ or memory across the board.”

Why the null result on far transfer is itself informative

It’s worth pausing on why the far-transfer finding is so consistent across such a large literature, rather than dismissing it as one disappointing study. Cognitive skills, as it turns out, tend to be considerably more specific and less generalizable than earlier researchers assumed decades ago, when brain training was first marketed. The skills that transfer well tend to be either genuinely general processes trained in a genuinely general way (physical exercise’s benefits for brain health are broader, likely because cardiovascular fitness affects the whole brain rather than one task-specific circuit), or narrow skills that stay narrow (getting fast at Sudoku makes you fast at Sudoku, not at unrelated numerical reasoning).

This specificity finding has reshaped how cognitive scientists think about skill acquisition more broadly, not just in the brain-training industry. It’s a genuinely important, if somewhat deflating, discovery: expertise built through practice is powerful but narrow, and assuming it generalizes without evidence is a common and understandable mistake, not a sign of gullibility.

A more honest way to think about it

If you enjoy Sudoku, Memory Match, or word search puzzles, that enjoyment is a legitimate reason to keep playing — genuinely pleasurable, low-stakes mental activity has value on its own terms, the same way a crossword or a good book does. If you’re hoping a daily puzzle habit will meaningfully improve your memory or reasoning in unrelated parts of your life, the evidence suggests you should set that expectation quite low, while not zero.
